Much of the landscape painting which I have worked on is either places I have been or imagined places which are heavily influenced by woodland and fields I spent time in as a child.
I grew up in one of Scotland’s “New Towns”. In recent years it appears that every inch of green space where I lived as a child has been sold to developers and now holds rows of houses. 30 years ago though, one of the benefits was that minutes from my door were woodlands, fields and burns and my memories of childhood are filled with these places that I spent much time.
Most children I knew were expert at climbing trees because there were so many of them and running through long grass was an everyday event in the summer months. Painting from memory is something in which I try to capture an emotion and a feeling for the mood of being there rather than simply a representation of a natural scene.
Some of the brush strokes used in the foreground got me quite excited as I considered the possibilities of other paintings carried out in this manner.
